Jane Tomlinson, Founder
1950 - 2003
In 1974 Jane was recruited to cater Georgia's Governor George Busbee's inaugural reception for 5,000 people. In 1997, at the suggestion of many of her clients and friends, Jane decided to experiment with mailing out her delicious cream cheese pound cakes as holiday gifts for corporations and individuals. The first year went extremely well, and Jane offered this service again during the 1998 holiday season. After such an overwhelming response, Jane decided it was time to offer her mail order cakes through out the year.
"Every batch of Jane's delicious recipe is closely monitored to be sure we maintain Jane's high standard of excellence," says her husband, Don. "We don't compromise with her original recipe. It is our way of keeping her legacy alive."
Meet Melissa of Cakes by Jane.
Cakes by Jane has been providing Asheville locals and people around the World with something delicious and comforting for over a decade: pound cake! After Jane passed in 2003 from breast cancer, Melissa was just the right woman to take on this remarkable business and keep Jane's legacy alive and well.
Since then, Melissa has become owner and baker and has had a taste of what the cake business is all about, much to her delight. Melissa's introduction into the baking world was a twist of fate. When asked how she got started in cake decorating, Melissa replied "it's actually a funny story. A friend of mine wanted to take a cake decorating class and twisted my arm to go with her. I was very skeptical in the beginning, but by the end, my cake turned out to be the best one in the class!
A true artist at heart, Melissa was able to finally combine her two passions-- art and food. At cakes by Jane, she is in charge of every cake and every design that goes into the oven and out the door. Melissa is a busy mother of three, Sierra, Dakota, and Noah. And one assistant to help her in the kitchen, Wendy, Melissa has her hands full, but according to this cake master, she loves it.
"To see poeple's reactions to the cakes I make is so gratifying." "It gives me so much happiness to create something they love and enjoy."
There are different aspects of Cakes by Jane that make it such a wonderful business. Our mail-order pound cakes that are shipped all over the country -- even overseas. These pound cakes are still made from Jane's original Southern cream cheese pound cake recipe and are a huge hit when it comes to holiday gift-giving.
"Through Jane's wonderful creation, cake-giving has become very popular," Melissa says. "They are the perfect gift because it's something that can be shared with family and friends at anytime of the year. It's become a wonderful Asheville tradition and holiday tradition for many of our customers across the country."
With alluring flavors like cinnamon spice, maple pecan, raspberry delight, among many others, your taste buds will plead for another slice. Each cake has it's own unique individuality--it's really a reflection of who they are."
